São Navios-Escolta. Podem localizar e destruir aeronaves, navios de superfície e submarinos inimigos, além de efetuar patrulhas nas nossas águas.

História
Em 20 de novembro de 1976, foi incorporado à Armada a Fragata “Niterói”, primeira dos seis navios e que deu nome a Classe. Seguiram-se a Fragata “Defensora” em 1977, as Fragatas “Constituição” e “Liberal” em 1978, a Fragata “Independência” em 1979 e a Fragata “União” em 1980, estas duas últimas construídas no Arsenal de Marinha do Rio de Janeiro, com material, equipamentos e assistência técnica do estaleiro inglês. Esta Classe de navios representou um marco de avanço tecnológico em termos de sistemas de combate e de manutenção, como parte do Programa de Renovação e Ampliação de Meios Flutuantes da Marinha.
A Fragata Defensora (F-41) é o segundo navio a ostentar esse nome na Marinha do Brasil, o primeiro foi a corveta Defensora construída em 1828. A construção da Defensora foi iniciada em 13 de setembro de 1972, tendo a quilha batida em 14 de dezembro. Foi lançada e batizada em 27 de março de 1975, tendo como madrinha a Sra. Zazi Aranha Correia da Costa, esposa do Embaixador Sérgio Correia da Costa. Fez-se ao mar pela primeira vez em 27 de setembro de 1976 para verificação de dados táticos e provas de máquinas e casco, que se estenderam até o dia 9 de novembro. Foi incorporada em 5 de março de 1977.
A Fragata Constituição (F-42), é o terceiro navio a ostentar esse nome na Marinha do Brasil e a terceira unidade da classe Niterói a ser construída pela Vosper Thornycroft Ltd., em Woolston, Hampshire, Inglaterra, tendo a quilha batida em 13 de março de 1974. Foi lançada e batizada em 15 de abril de 1976 e teve como Madrinha a Sra. Stella de Oliveira Campos, esposa do Embaixador do Brasil na Inglaterra. Entre 31 de outubro e 15 de dezembro, realizou suas primeiras saídas para o mar a fim de realizar a provas de casco, maquinas e sistemas a cargo do estaleiro construtor. Foi incorporada em 31 de março de 1978.
A Fragata Liberal (F-43) é o quarto navio a ostentar esse nome na Marinha do Brasil e a quarta construída pela Vosper Thornycroft Ltd. Teve sua quilha batida em 2 de maio de 1975. Foi lançada e batizada em 7 de fevereiro de 1977. Depois de realizar as provas de mar, foi aceita e incorporada em 18 de novembro de 1978.
A Fragata Independência (F-44) é o quinto navio a ostentar esse nome na Marinha do Brasil. Teve sua quilha batida em cerimônia conjunta com a da Fragata União, em 11 de junho de 1972. Foi batizada e lançada em 2 de setembro de 1974, tendo como madrinha a Sra. Luci Geisel, esposa do Presidente da Republica Exmo Sr. Ernesto Geisel. Fez-se ao mar pela primeira vez em 11 de dezembro de 1978 para realizar as provas de mar. Foi submetida a Mostra de Armamento e incorporada em 3 de setembro de 1979.
A Fragata União (F-45), é o sexto navio a ostentar esse nome na Marinha do Brasil. Teve sua quilha batida em cerimônia conjunta com a da Fragata Independência em 11 de junho de 1972. Foi lançada e batizada em 14 de março de 1975, tendo como Madrinha a Sra. Hilda Faria Lima, esposa do então Governador do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Entre 2 de junho e 30 de julho, realizou as Provas de Mar. Foi incorporada em 12 de setembro de 1980.
