O Navio, atual Capitânia da Esquadra, é projetado para as tarefas de Controle de áreas marítimas, projeção de poder sobre terra, pelo mar e ar. É apropriado, também, para missões de caráter humanitário, auxílio a vítimas de desastres naturais, de evacuação de pessoal e em operações de manutenção de paz.
Meio Naval: A140 – “Atlântico”
História
Foi realizada em 29 de junho de 2018, na Base Naval de Sua Majestade, em Devonport, na cidade de Plymouth – UK, a Mostra de Armamento, iniciando a singradura do Navio, na Marinha do Brasil.
O NAM “Atlântico”, HMS “Ocean”, na Marinha Real Britânica, foi construído em meados dos anos 90 pela Kvaerner Govan e pela VSEL em Barrow-in-Furness. Comissionado em setembro de 1998, operou a partir da Base Naval de Devonport, em Plymouth.
No seu histórico de serviço, constam operações navais em apoio a ações humanitárias no Kosovo e na América Central. No ano 2000, participou da Operação Palliser, na Serra Leoa. Logo em seguida, operou no Oriente Médio, no grupo de combate do HMS Illustrious na Guerra do Iraque. Em 2009, foi deslocado para a Ásia, novamente em operações navais e apoio a ações humanitárias. Em 2011, participou da Operação Unified Protector, na Líbia. No ano seguinte, retornou à Inglaterra para reformas e, posteriormente, participou de operações navais, no âmbito da Organização do Tratado do Atlântico Norte. Em 2017, participou da operação Ruman, por meio de operações navais em apoio a ações humanitárias nas ilhas do Caribe, afetadas pelo furacão Irma.
O nome Atlântico remete a saga das Grandes Navegações, que proporcionaram, entre outros notáveis feitos da Escola de Sagres, o descobrimento do Brasil. Adicionalmente, atesta a relevância desse espaço oceânico na conformação da nação brasileira, em todos os períodos de sua história.
