Função
Os submarinos são navios de guerra capazes de alterar seu grau de flutuabilidade, podendo assim efetuar patrulhas e ataques submersos na água.

S30 – “Tupi”
S31 – “Tamoio”
S32 – “Timbira”
S33 – “Tapajó”
História
O Submarino Tupi – S 30, foi o terceiro navio e o segundo submarino a ostentar esse nome na Marinha do Brasil, em homenagem ao guerreiro e a nação Tupi. Foi ordenado em fevereiro de 1984, junto ao estaleiro Howaldtswerke Deutsche Werft, em Kiel, na Alemanha. Teve sua quilha batida (casco 197) em 8 de março de 1985. Foi batizado e lançado em 28 de abril de 1987, tendo como madrinha a Sra. Heloísa Fonseca, esposa do ex-Ministro da Marinha Almirante de Esquadra Maximiano Eduardo da Silva Fonseca. Foi entregue pela HDW em 20 de dezembro de 1988, sendo incorporado a Marinha do Brasil, ficando a partir daí como “navio isolado”. Depois de realizar provas de mar e treinamento da tripulação no Báltico, foi submetido a Mostra de Armamento e incorporado a Armada em Kiel, na Alemanha em 6 de maio de 1989.
O Submarino Tamoio – S 31, foi o terceiro navio e o segundo submarino a ostentar esse nome na Marinha do Brasil, em homenagem ao guerreiro Tamoio. Foi ordenado junto ao AMRJ – Arsenal de Marinha do Rio de Janeiro. Teve sua quilha batida em 15 de julho de 1986. Foi lançado e batizado em 18 de novembro de 1993, tendo como Madrinha a Srta. Tatiana de Faro Orlando, neta do Comandante do primeiro Submarino Tamoyo. Em 14 de julho de 1994, se fez ao mar pela primeira vez, sendo submetido à Mostra de Armamento em 12 de dezembro de 1994. No dia 15 de fevereiro de 1995, dando prosseguimento as provas de mar, realizou o teste de máxima profundidade de imersão, atingindo uma profundidade superior a 300 metros, até então nunca atingida por um submarino brasileiro. Foi entregue ao setor operativo e incorporado a Esquadra em 17 de julho de 1995.
O Submarino Timbira – S 32, foi o terceiro navio e o segundo submarino a ostentar esse nome na Marinha do Brasil, em homenagem ao guerreiro Timbira, da nação indígena do Maranhão. Foi ordenado junto ao AMRJ – Arsenal de Marinha do Rio de Janeiro. Teve sua quilha batida (casco 116) em 15 de setembro de 1987. Foi lançado ao mar em 5 de janeiro de 1996, com admissão de água do mar no Dique Flutuante Alte. Schieck, tendo como madrinha a Primeira Dama Sra. Ruth Leite Correa Cardoso. Em 14 de novembro de 1996, realizou a primeira saída para o mar para testes de maquinas, realizados ao largo da praia de Copacabana no Rio de Janeiro. Em 22 de novembro, suspendeu para testes de imersão estática, atingindo a cota de 30 metros. Em 16 de dezembro de 1996, foi submetido a Mostra de Armamento.
O Submarino Tapajó – S 33, ex-Tapajós, foi o terceiro navio e o primeiro submarino a ostentar esse nome na Marinha do Brasil, em homenagem ao guerreiro, a tribo e ao rio Tapajós. Foi ordenado junto ao AMRJ – Arsenal de Marinha do Rio de Janeiro. Teve sua quilha batida em agosto de 1992. Foi lançado em 5 de junho de 1998, tendo como madrinha a Sra. Anna Maria Ferreira Maciel, esposa do Vice-Presidente Dr. Marcos Maciel. Foi entregue, e depois de realizar provas de mar foi submetido a Mostra de Armamento e Incorporado a Armada em 21 de dezembro de 1999.
